Madden Grove is a contemporary new dwelling on a corner block in Kew, designed by Melbourne-based studio Hebert & Howes and built by Creato Homes. The home’s considered architectural design is complemented by warm engineered European oak flooring, creating continuity throughout the living spaces while making the striking spiral staircase a central feature.
The flooring extends across approximately 140m² of the home, with the staircase detail carefully integrated into the overall installation. The result is a cohesive timber finish that can be appreciated from multiple viewpoints throughout the residence.

Designed and specified by Hebert & Howes, the project features approximately 140m² of 190mm engineered European oak flooring in a straight plank layout. Wooden Floors Melbourne also incorporated custom square-set nosing throughout the spiral staircase, creating a considered transition between the main flooring and one of the home’s defining architectural features.

The flooring needed to complement the clean lines and contemporary character of the new residence while making the most of its distinctive architectural features. A key focus was ensuring the prominent spiral staircase was integrated seamlessly into the flooring design rather than treated as a separate element.
Our Approach
Working closely with the team at Creato Homes, Wooden Floors Melbourne installed the engineered European oak flooring throughout the residence in a straight plank configuration. The spiral staircase was finished with custom square-set nosing, requiring careful detailing to maintain continuity between the main floor and staircase. The team also coordinated the installation around the broader construction schedule.
Challenges and Solutions
The flooring installation itself was relatively straightforward, but the staircase required careful coordination with the construction program. Final plastering needed to be completed before the staircase landing and steps could be finished. Rather than risk damage to the completed flooring during the final stages of construction, Wooden Floors Melbourne returned to complete these areas immediately before handover.
Outcome
The finished flooring provides a consistent timber foundation throughout the contemporary home, while the custom staircase detailing gives the entrance a distinctive focal point. The spiral staircase can be viewed from multiple locations throughout the residence, allowing the craftsmanship and timber detailing to become a visible feature of the home’s overall design.
